FAQ Probiotic-based cleaning products (MBCP)

Provilan is Probiotic Group’s flagship brand.

It offers a wide range of products, from detergents and cosmetics to pet care products.

Our key words are : Well-being, good health, ecology, circular economy, high quality, safety, R&D, innovation.

Probiotics are living micro-organisms with positive effects on health.
Probiotic bacteria are microscopic living beings that are invisible to the naked eye.
They are highly intelligent beings who know perfectly well how to work together to survive.
In fact, their aim is to survive as long as possible.
To survive, bacteria need a healthy environment, i.e. warmth, humidity and food.

Bacteria can be divided into different categories:

  • Pathogenic, undesirable bacteria that can cause bacterial infections in both humans and animals.
  • The healthy bacteria we need to stay healthy – probiotics

Ready-to-use Provilan products contain 1,000,000 cfu/ml.
Provilan concentrates contain 10,000,000 cfu/ml.

The consortium may differ depending on the type of product, but all bacteria are QPS-certified and produced in the European Union – our bio-bank of bacteria contains over 100 safe strains – and 1,000 strains of interest.

  • Microorganisms eliminate organic matter (sources of nutrients)
  • They multiply if the environment is favorable and occupy space
  • They create a protective and diversified microflora
  • They last for long hours, prolonging cleaning efficiency

The probiotics we use all belong to the Bacillus group.

Like all bacteria, Bacillus aims to multiply in its environment.
These strains are part of the QPS (Qualified Presumption of Safety) list.
These are micro-organisms that have been tested and verified:

  • No toxinogenic activity
  • Do not contain clinically relevant antimicrobial resistance genes
  • Approved EFSA (European Food Safety Authority)

In addition to these bacteria, we use mild surfactants and food-grade preservatives controlled by accredited certification bodies.

Our solutions are designed and tested by our in-house and partner laboratories.

The added value of our products lies in the addition of live bacteria, probiotics (marketing term) or micro-organisms (scientific term).

Our modern biotechnology is based on microbiology, the study of beneficial and unhealthy micro-organisms.
Probiotic Group undertakes research and development on a daily basis.

The aim is to study effective micro-organisms for cleaning and care.
These are carefully selected by an in-house team of experienced researchers to develop new bacterial cocktails and first-class formulations guaranteeing viability, safety and long-term efficacy.

An enzyme is a protein capable of accelerating a chemical reaction.

  • Enzymes are not modified during reactions.
  • They are specific to a single reaction: one type of enzyme for one type of substrate.
  • They cut molecules of dirt to prepare the ground and facilitate cleaning.

Bacteria are living organisms that produce their own enzymes (and acids).

  • Probiotics are capable of producing several thousand different enzymes and therefore of degrading a greater diversity.
  • Adapt and produce enzymes according to their needs.
  • Total degradation of molecules: probiotics produce enzymes that cut molecules from substrates.
    The probiotics then digest them.
  • Probiotics multiply and colonize space over time.
  • They prolong cleaning efficiency.

The probiotics contained in our products are in the form of spores.
A spore is a round or oval capsular membrane, resistant to heat and chemical agents, which the bacterium surrounds itself with to temporarily survive unfavorable living conditions.

Bacteria that form spores are more resistant.
The spore enables the bacterium to protect itself and live longer.
In the spore, the bacterium is in a dormant state.
It will emerge from its spore (germinate) when the environment is favorable (nutrients, temperature, humidity).
The development time of bacteria on a surface is generally 20 minutes, depending on the surrounding environment.

Thereafter, colonization is exponential as long as the environment remains favorable to probiotics.

We estimate 72 hours in a favorable environment.
Some studies have shown a 10-week (over)life in a “dirty” environment.

It’s difficult to define the lifespan of probiotics on a surface.
In fact, the activity time of bacteria depends on a number of external factors and the environment in which they are found.
We can also confirm that in wastewater treated with our micro-organisms, we have been able to observe the presence of our bacteria in the water and sludge for over 30 days.

The strains used are QFS-certified.
The other ingredients, however, are not.
These are ingredients that are under another certification and detergent ingredients intended to increase cleaning efficiency.

The products are not considered harmful to the respiratory tract, but we recommend that you do not inhale them.
In case of doubt, all information concerning the solutions can be found on the safety data sheet, which also highlights the VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Some products also have Air Label certification, which takes a closer look at the composition of our products to certify that they emit non-toxic gases/compounds.

Spores are not UV-sensitive.
However, cells in the vegetative phase are.
So there’s little risk of viability being affected by UV.

However, our bottles are either opaque or fitted with a UV filter.

No specific cleaning protocol, just use as you would a normal cleaning product.
Don’t change your habits – ready-to-use or concentrated to dilute, we have a solution for all customers looking for household or professional products.

To date, four Provilan Clean products have been tested by an independent VOC-negative/below-limit laboratory: Air Optimizer, Descaler, Fresh and Water.

The others are verified by our regulatory affairs department on the basis of information available from suppliers and manufacturers.

There are well-defined protocols for testing the effectiveness of solutions.

Effectiveness has been tested to Ecolabel standards for two products: Provilan Clean Descaler and Provilan Clean Toilet Cleaner.
Ready-to-use surface cleaners have been tested to ASTM and CFT standards.

Tests on synthetic odors have also proven the effectiveness of Provilan Clean Odor Remover and biomass alone.

We also have scientific reports available for review, such as enzymatic activities showing a reduction in starch, sugars, blood and fat, as well as health-oriented reports showing a drastic reduction in allergens when Provilan is used.

The products do not require rinsing.

When it is useful to rinse, this is indicated on the product label.
For example, in the case of Provilan Clean Floor Cleaner or Universal Cleaner, rinse the foam if necessary.

Some products are highly biodegradable.
Naturalness indices always exceed 95%.
Specific data can be sent to you on request.

Please download the PDF – the correct dilutions of Provilan products are described.
As a general rule, we use 1% for concentrated cleaners and 5~10% for odour destroyers, depending on the degree of persistence.

Provilan has several certifications:

  • Green Seal
  • Peta Cruelty Free & Vegan
  • SDK
  • Made in Luxembourg
  • EU Ecolabel

The products do not contain endocrine disruptors.

Our main preservative is Sodium Benzoate, a food-grade preservative which has no impact on health.

Other agents of concern are not used in Provilan products (see MIT).

Products cannot be combined on the same surface at the same time, as we have developed specific microbial cocktails for well-defined applications/objectives.

We appreciate the competition and the fact that more and more companies are interested in furthering their research in the field of microbial cleaners.
We recognize that interest is high and that worldwide attention is being paid to alternative cleaning products that respect not only the environment but also the health of consumers (+ all members of the household family including pets).

Probiotic Group’s greatest asset is its investment in research and development – in fact, in 2024, over 25 people are working full-time on our R&D projects with highly qualified profiles, often PhDs from all over Europe.
Our main objectives are to prove our claims and defend microbial cleansers not only as an innovative new trend, but also as the way forward in the fight against health-related problems.

The entire value-added chain is integrated into the company, from market research to R&D, production, marketing and sometimes direct sales channels – we train customers and future customers to switch to more sustainable products.
We also believe that the quality of our products, whether locally or cleanly sourced, is a major asset.
People trust companies that can deliver quality products with a certain amount of know-how – we offer that to our customers.

Openness and transparency are also part of our corporate culture, our doors are open to see how great the Probiotic Group team is and how we approach our product roadmap with our strategic partners.
